Learn Brush Lettering
I enjoy creating all sorts of things but sometimes I love the thought of making something simple that is just about the physical flow of the brush on the page. For me, this is when I turn to the comforting art of brush lettering.
Using a brush and ink to create lettering feels authentic, gentle and traditional. The feel of the brush on the page is relaxing and when you get in a rhythm, it almost feels like meditating. Because you're concentrating so much on the lines and letters, you don’t think about anything else and this makes it feel lovely and calming.
Brush lettering celebrates imperfection. Letters don’t have to be all the same size or to adhere to certain lines on a page. There is nothing regimented about it. And brush lettering looks really lovely with other mediums, such as watercolours and gouache paints so it’s a beautiful thing to add to your own pieces of art.
I learnt to brush letter in a class almost ten years ago and I’ve found myself returning to it regularly over the years. I wanted to share the skill with you so I have put together a simple Love Brushlettering website showing you the basics. There’s also some information about the materials I use and a page of ideas to inspire you. If you find yourself having a go, tag me in your creations on Instagram @ifindoubtcreate - I’d love to see.
