Calm: Brush Lettering

When I need a little bit of calm or simply want to create something pretty, I often find myself turning to brush lettering. I learnt the basics in a class in a pub one Saturday morning several years ago and discovered that it’s a lovely mindful practice. The trick is to use a light upwards stroke and heavier downward stroke of the brush to give the letters that beautiful character. I letter lyrics, poetry, quotes and phrases that mean something to me and spend time on the curves and lines. You can’t letter quickly. By it’s nature it asks you to slow down and to be considered. And I love its nod to old fashioned ways. Dipping a brush into a pot of deep black Winsor & Newton ink and watching it soak into cold pressed 300 gsm paper, the perfect antidote to screen time.

If you’re interested to see more of my lettering, I’ve created a ‘Love Brush Lettering’ Instagram page that I add to when I create something new.
